SISTER JOANNA MEIER
Atchison--Sister Joanna Meier, 97, Atchison, died Monday, Sept. 18, 1995, at Mount St. Scholastica convent here.
She was born Eleanor Meier Oct. 17, 1897, in Nortonville, the daughter of John and Caroline Schneider Meier. She joined Benedictine Sisters in Atchison in 1917 and professed her vows in 1919.
Sister Joanna taught a year at Guardian Angels School in Kansas City, Mo., six years at St. Mary's School in Maryville, Mo., and spent the rest of her career as an educator at Catholic schools in Kansas.
She served as principal and teacher at Annunciation School in Frankfort from 1944 to 1947, at Corpus Christi School in the Mooney Creek community near Winchester from 1950 to 1956, and at Sacred Heart School in Paxico from 1957 to 1965.
She was a teacher at Sts. Peter and Paul School in Seneca from 1925 to 1927 and from 1935 to 1939, at St. Leo's School in Horton from 1939 to 1944, at Holy Trinity School in Lenexa from 1920 to 1924 and from 1956 to 1957, and at St. Joseph's School in Shawnee from 1931 to 1933 and from 1966 to 1969,
Nieces and nephews survive.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mount St. Scholastica Chapel in Atchison. Burial will be in sisters Cemetery on the convent grounds. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. today at the chapel where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.
