Known as Will, he was the son of Mary J. (Kelsay) and Rev. William W. Grinstead.

He married November 24, 1910 in Morgan County, Missouri to Mayme Hays.

Although they had no children, they raised Mayme's nephews, Wilson "Lee" and Benjamin Franklin "B.F." Hays, (sons of Benjamin F. and Eula (Wells) Hays), after the boys' mother's untimely death in childbirth.
