ROBERT (SHORTY) BALLARD

Robert [Earl] (Shorty) Ballard, of Strong, age 33, was killed instantly Saturday morning, December 8, 1945, when he fell from an oil tank at Big Lake (Reagan County) Texas. The body will arrive in El Dorado Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock, by way of Missouri Pacific, and will be taken to the Rumph Mortuary to await burial.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Opal Givens Ballard of Strong; two daughters, LaFran and Peggy Ann; his father, Ben J. Ballard of Strong; his grandmother, Mrs. Jane Ballard of Strong; three brothers, Armon Ballard of Ft. Worth, Texas, Eudean Ballard, with the U. S. Army stationed in the South Pacific, and B. J. Ballard, Jr. of Strong; four sisters, Mrs. George Langley of Strong, Mrs. J. E. Simmons of Crossett, Mrs. C. P. King of Winnsboro, La., and Mrs. Louie Walton of North Little Rock, Ar.

Funeral services were held at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church of Strong, at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday, December 11, with Rev. Lloyd Tucker of West Crossett officiating, and the Rev. Van Zant of Strong assisting. Burial was in the Ebenezer Cemetery.

Casket-bearers were: Corbin King, Herman Anderson, Leo Harper, Felston Gardner, Bryan Russell, and John Estes.

Honorary bearers were: Bill King, Earnest King, Aubrey Ferguson, Wallis Vorhease, Odell Simmons, Earnest Phelps, Howard Kelley, Collis (Pete) Plair, Norwood Walton, Randall Wooley, Roy Hill, Jim Bob Norris, Frank Sturdivant, P. M. Walton, George Ramey, W. C. Raiford, Ed Moore, J. C. Pagan, Wayne Husbands, George White, John Gandy, D. F. Haygood, David Clanton, J. E. McNabb, Roy Hickman, Clifton Pagan, C. F. Walton, Elbert Kemp, Bill Saunders, and Wheatley Pagan. Rumph Mortuary is in charge.

Added by M. K. Burson: Aubrey Ferguson was Joseph Aubrey Ferguson. (1904-1966). Buried at Old Lapile Cemetery. He was a brother to Edward (Buster) Ferguson, who later in life married Mattie Ezelle.

Felston Gardner was Felston James Gardner (1912-1997). Buried at Spearsville Cemetery in Union Parish. He married Lorene McClendon.

John Estes was John Wiley Estes, who, from about 1944-48, ran the Lion Café in Strong. It was located behind the old Charles Johnson Service Station.
