Kathy Sue Purvis, age 58, of Cross Plains went to her heavenly home on Sunday, April 25, 2010 in Abilene with family and friends around her. The family will be receiving friends and relatives for a time of sharing memories on Tuesday, April 27th from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Cross Plains with Pastor Ronnie B. White officiating: burial will follow in the Cross Plains Memorial Cemetery.
She was born on June 6, 1951 in Coleman, Texas to Jimmie Lee and Virginia Ruth (Neeb) Payne. She graduated from Cross Plains High School in 1969. Shortly thereafter she married Ray Purvis on July 5, 1969 in Cross Plains. She worked at Bryan's Variety Store after graduation, then for JRB Grocery Store before returning to school at Howard Payne University in Brownwood. Kathy and her son Kevin both graduated the same year, he from High School and she from College graduating Sum Cum Laud. She worked in Eula for a year, and then returned to teach in Cross Plains. Kathy loved teaching and so enjoyed educating her students on science and imparting the knowledge that she had learned. Her students were her children and she loved each and every one of them and would help them in anyway that she could.
Kathy never ceased to learn; she taught herself to play the guitar and used it to help her students to learn in school as well as in Vacation Bible School. Before her illness she sang in the church choir, and would sing specials on Sunday mornings. She always enjoyed doing the music for VBS and the children would always get excited and look forward to going to see Mrs. Purvis and learn songs and see the Puppets. She was a shinning example of a Christian woman. She loved God above all else, then her family, her Sunday School Class, her students and fellow teachers, and community. After Kathy's first bout with cancer, she was instrumental in getting the Cancer Walk started here in Cross Plains, it will continue in memory of her. She lived by her favorite scripture Philippians 4:13.
She is survived by her husband, Ray Purvis of Cross Plains; son, Kevin Ray Purvis and wife, Yvonne of Watauga; daughter, Angela Sue Purvis and partner Rhonda Methvin of Albuquerque, NM; brothers, Jerry Payne and wife Laura of Brownwood; James Payne and wife Edith of Ft. Stockton; and sister, Melissa Baughman and husband Kenny of Magnolia; and mother, Virginia Payne of Rising Star.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jimmie Lee Payne.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Cross Plains Cancer Fund, c/o Texas Heritage Bank, PO Box 699, Cross Plains, TX 76443.
