Lois I. Winters quietly passed this life on Thursday, April 22, 2010, at the age of 98 years.
Service: A visitation service will take place 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Land Funeral Home. A private family burial will follow on Monday.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, she would like her friends to consider contributions to one of the children's funds at Altamesa Church of Christ, 4600 Altamesa Blvd., Fort Worth, Texas 76133.
Born in Abilene on Jan. 9, 1912, Lois was the only daughter of Martin Van Buren Tune and Allie Spencer Tune. She had two brothers, Buford and Claude. Her early homes were in Abilene and Sylvester. She later moved to Dallas where she graduated from North Dallas High School. After school, she was hired by the Texas Legislature as a member of its capitol stenographic pool. It was in Dallas, at the Peak and Eastside Church of Christ, that she met Ardis Winters. They were married for almost 72 years.
Following in her mother's footsteps, she very early became an accomplished fashion designer and seamstress. Her first award came during her senior year in high school with an original two-piece suit that was selected by her school to be shown at the State Fair of Texas. After prize winning entries in both Dallas and Fort Worth, her work merited honorable mention in New York competitions, in 1948 and 1949.
A Fort Worth resident for over 70 years, she was a charter member of three Church of Christ congregations: West Berry, Trail Lake, and Altamesa. As a couple, she and Ardis actively supported children's homes, many Christian colleges and universities, and helped establish and build mission churches.
Survivors: Her sons, Stan and wife, Pat, Gerald and wife, Margie, all of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Steve and wife, Connie, of North Carolina, Sharyl Winters of Watauga, Scott and wife, Libby, of Austin, Lisa and husband, Charlie Dellard, of Burleson, and Cary Winters of Fort Worth; great-grandchildren, Harris, Kirby, and Dillon Winters of North Carolina, Brandon Wilson of Burleson, Grady Wilson of Dallas, and Ryan Winters of Fort Worth; and special family friend, Lucretia Potts of Fort Worth.
