Steve was the son of John Martin Salyer & Biddie Collins Salyer. He was a direct descendant of Zachariah Salyer, Jr., who was one of the earliest settlers of Russell County, Virginia. He was proud of his nativity and would say "I may live in Indiana, but I'm not a Hoosier!".

Several of his siblings had moved to Indiana and Ohio. After his mother passed away, Steve moved to Indiana. Leola Margaret Stephen, the daughter of Eugene Wesley Stephen & Bertha May Thompson Steven, on February 20, 1928 in Eaton, Ohio. It was his second marriage and her first. The marriage was of a short duration and ended in divorce.

He returned to Scott County, Virginia and married Goldie E. (nee Baker) Sourbeer, the daughter of Ulysses Grant Baker & Della Viola Pullon Baker, on November 20, 1932. After one week of marriage, he left his wife and returned to Indiana. Their divorce was granted on August 15, 1946 in Gate City, Virginia (long after his 1936 Indiana marriage and the birth of his child).

He married Ruth Ellen Spurlin, the daughter of Floyd Emery Spurlin & Laura Victoria Snowden Spurlin, on October 6, 1936 in Union City, Indiana. They operated a combination grocery store and filling station in Webster, Indiana. He was a mechanic. The couple were the parents of one child, Shirley Ann Salyer. Mrs. Salyer passed away, in 1953.

He married Cornelia Beatrice (nee Orrell) Williams Stidham on July 20, 1975 in Fort Wayne and was widowed, again, in 1977.

His daughter, Shirley, and granddaughter, Catherine, were at his bedside when Mr. Salyer passed away. Following funeral services, his remains were laid to rest, at the Prairie Grove Cemetery, on February 2, 1983.

•The area, where he was raised, is very close to the Mount Vernon Methodist Church and Cemetery in Scott County, Virginia. I feel that he chose the Prairie Grove Cemetery as his final resting place because the adjoining church so closely resembles the one from his boyhood.
