Lees Summit, MO — Brian S. Akabane passed away unexpectedly on April 16, 2010. Brian was a devoted husband, brother, son, father, and friend whose death will be mourned and his life celebrated.

Brian was born April 19, 1974, in St. Joseph, MO. Brian graduated from Central High School in 1992, where he excelled in both academics and athletics. In 1997, Brian graduated with honors from Missouri State University. While at Missouri State, Brian was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

After college, Brian began his career at Hallmark Cards in the Information Technology Division. After seven years, Brian went to work for Accenture as a Consultant. In 2008, Brian returned to Hallmark as a Project Manager in Information Technology.

Brian was an avid athlete and runner who qualified this past fall for the Boston Marathon in his first attempt. Brian competed every year in the Kansas City Corporate Challenge in multiple events. In 2004 Brian was named Hallmark's Corporate Challenge Athlete of the Year. His favorite events included swimming, track, weightlifting, and Tug-of-War.
Although his life was tragically cut short, Brian lived each day to the fullest, and was an inspiration to all that knew him. Brian was loved by many, and will be missed by all.

Brian is survived by his wife, Winnie, and his step son, Andrew, both of Lee's Summit; his mother, Eiko and step father, Russell Hollowell, both of St. Joseph, MO; his father, Shigeru Akabane of St. Joseph; his brother, Eddie Akabane of Honolulu, Hawaii; his sister, Angel Akabane of San Diego, CA; and countless friends and associates privileged enough to have know him.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday evening, April 20, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home located at 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, Mo. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 21, at 10 a.m. at the Birchwood Church located at 3883 Blue Ridge Blvd., Independence, MO.

The family suggests donations to World Vision or the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Missouri State University for their scholarship fund. Donations may be sent in memory of Brian Akabane.
