Alpheus is the son of Charles Garrett Potts and his wife, Virginia Ann Rebecca Dobie Potts. Alpheus William Potts's was born and reared in Virginia. Alpheus and Frances "Fannie E" moved in 1875 to Texas,Brazos County, where four children are born. In 1882 they moved to Clifton where he owned one of the first five stores in town, of all things with this Baptist family - Potts' Wine and Cigar Emporium. In 1886, they lived along Hogg Creek and settled on the old home place near Searsville in 1888,where Frances and the children farmed. Alpheus was a cotton buyer,and had a butcher shop. The market was along the railroad track. He also sold root beer and lemonade.
Alpheus was in the Civil War, belonged to Company A Sturdivant Battery, Richmond, Virginia and served a few months in the artillery. He was paroled as a prisoner of war.
Alpheus was the third son of Charles Garrett Potts; his mother was Virginia Ann Rebecca Dobie Potts. Charles Sydney Potts died of Typhoid Fever during the war 1862, and Chastello James Potts died as an infant 1846. Alpheus married Frances Everline Smith Potts in Georgia in 1873. Frances "Fannie E " was the daughter of James Garrett Smith and Nancy Hand and granddaughter of Parks Washington Smith and Caroline Garrett Smith who were married in 1823. Frances and Alpheus had 11 children with this union: Gussie, Willie, Fannie, Nannie, Mamie, Emma, Ella Bird, Georgie, Tom P., two children died in infancy Alpheus Clifton and Sydney Smith Potts.
