James was the youngest of three children born to William B. Robert Jr. and Jimmie Betty Copeland. He was about 18 months old when the family left Waco, TX and moved to Bellflower, CA in Dec. 1950. By 1952 the family was in Garden Grove, CA where he attended school by 1954. Later in 1956 the family moved to Santa Ana, CA where he finished school and graduated from Santa Ana Valley High School in 1967. He then joined the Army and was sent to Germany before being transferred to Vietnam. He married in Dec. 1980 to Wendy McCue aboard the Queen Mary ship docked in Long Beach Harbor in CA. They had one daughter Verity born in 1982.
James loved to play chess and he also tutored students at a local college.
