Ella was born Riley Kansas, and was a descendant of Prussian Immigrants. Her mother Mary Teske Smith, died when she was just about 6, and her father Adolphus Smith, remarried. She had 2 younger brothers at the time. Her step mother was just 8 years older than she was. Her father and step mother (whose name was also Ella), had one daughter while living in Kansas, and then they brought the family out to Oregon. They are found listed in the 1880 Census in Blaylock, Umatilla, Oregon, Their family grew, and Ella had two more half brothers and another half sister.

Ella herself was probably a young widow, as she had a son, Earnest, who was either an infant, or she was expecting him, when she married Lindsay Boone Whiteley, who himself was a widower with 3 young sons. She was about 24 when she married Lindsey and they joined their families together. Lindsey fully adopted Earnest, and raised him as his own son. They had a daughter and two more sons together, giving them a total of 7 children.
