Gilbert Lafayette Andrews, 85, The Dalles, died May 10, 2000, at Columbia Basin Nursing Home.

Mr. Andrews was a longtime resident of Klamath and Lake Counties before moving to northern Oregon in 1973.

Mr. Andrews was born in Colorado, the 11th child of Edward Leaon and Beulah Melinda (Marchant) Andrews. He grew up near Burlington. During the Depression he served in the National Guard and Civilian Conservation Corps.

On March 12, 1939, he married Mary Jean Holbrook in Minden, Nev. They lived in Southern Oregon until 1973, when they moved to Sherman County. In 1985 they moved to The Dalles.

Mr. Andrews was a millwright, machinist and welder, and worked in sawmills throughout the West. He was a member of the Church of Christ Restored and enjoyed hunting, fishing, dogs, long drives, camping and spending time with his family.

Mr. Andrews is survived by his children and their spouses, Dixie and Don Fleming of Aumsville, Edna Lee Schulze of Lakeview, Lester Andrews of Springfield, Leaon E. Andrews, of Seward, Alaska, Gilbert G. Andrews of Oregon City, Mary McDaniel of Redmond, Larry Andrews of Wishram, Wash.; Florence and Leland Young of Klamath Falls, Virginia and Leo Wagoner of Union, Pamela and Jim Hill of Goldendale, Wash., Evelyn and Ken Bowers of Wishram and Harold and Jane Andrews of Goldendale; 37 grandchildren, more than 50 great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Esther Andrews of Stillwater, Okla., and Jacqueline Schnitzuis of Vallejo, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Andrew D. Andrews, and four grandchildren.
