LaFAYETTE, GA -- Charlotte Elizabeth Abney, 88, died Friday, March 26, 2010, in a local health care facility.

She was a native of Barney, Ga., and a longtime resident of North Georgia. She attended Middle Georgia College where she met Ross Abney. After they were married, she supported her husband in the family business, Abney's Department Store. Many company employees and salesmen enjoyed her southern hospitality and cooking. Her home was always open to people of all ages and was a second home to many of her children's friends.

Mrs. Abney was active in school activities involving her children, serving as president of the PTA and working with the LaFayette Band Boosters. Along with her husband, she was very involved with LaFayette Little League and served as Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.

She was a very active member of LaFayette First Baptist Church for many years sharing her Christian love and knowledge of the Bible with many young women in the community. She taught Sunday School for over 50 years to women of all ages and hosted a Bible Study in her home. Her concern for the elderly kept her busy volunteering at Shepherd Hills Nursing Home for many years. Mrs. Abney also worked with the less fortunate, seeking to provide for their many needs such as clothes, food, medicine, and financial assistance.

She received the Beta Sigma Phi Deserving Citizen Award and the LaFayette Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award. Mrs. Abney was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Louis Abney, and parents, Paris and Ethel Carter Culpepper.

Survivors are sons, Randy (Carolyn) Abney, Athens, Ga., Andy (Leslie) Abney, Greenville, S.C.; daughter, Sandy (John) Shadden, Chattanooga; sister, Mary Ruth Holleman, Smyrna, Ga.; grandchildren, Laura Wilhoite, Renee Musick, Adam Abney, Brandon Abney, Nicholas Shadden and Catie Shadden; six great-grandchildren.
