Gracie was born in Halifax, Va. and was raised by her mother, Mary Hupp, whose family owned a local grist mill near New Boston, Va. Gracie stayed in Halifax until 1892, when she moved, with her family to Danville, Va. She took a job, earning $.50 a day, with the Danville Cotton Mill. In 1903, while in Danville, Gracie was witness to the wreck of the "Old 97", the fastest mail train of its day which wrecked, killing 10 people. In 1904, she met and married the town barber, Edgar Alonzo Whitman. Edgar and Gracie divorced in 1933 but, Gracie kept his name for the remainder of her life. She moved to Jacksonville, Fl in 1949 and was a faithful member of the Avondale Congregation of the Jehovah's Witnesses. Gracie was pre-deceased by her son, Edgar Alonzo Whitman, Jr. and her daughter, Naomi Hazel Calabrase, as well as her sisters, Virginia Pearl Harper, Lillian Darcy Burroughs, and Hallie Belle Bullard. She was survived by her daughters, Ruby Geraldine Burnett, Mattie Cynthia Ladage, and Virginia Sue Pawela and a son, Daniel Jasper Whitman.
