Miss Matilda M. Mitchell

With the death of Miss Matilda Margaret ("Tilly") Mitchell (69 years) of "Maffra," Lockhart, on Friday evening, a link has been broken in the chain that helps to bind us with families who were the pioneers of this area before Lockhart was on the map. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Mitchell of "Flowerdale," Urangeline, whose home was the post office, clearing centre and also a social centre at a time when life was separated by wide open spaces. In this atmosphere Miss Mitchell was reared.

Her mother, a member of the Matthews family who migrated from Morwell (Vic.) to this district about 70 years ago, was the soul of kindness or if it is preferred, good neighbourliness, and Miss Mitchell shared much of her mother's spirit and also her mother's deep love of flowers. For many years she kept house for her brother, Mr. Andy Mitchell, who survives her; several brothers and sisters also survive her.

The funeral, after a short service, left St. Aidan's Church, Lockhart, on Sunday afternoon, for the Lockhart cemetery, where the Rev. H. C. Tassell officiated at the graveside. The carriers of the casket were Messrs. Jack Mitchell, Les Brooker, Don Mitchell and Les Mitchell (nephews), while the floral tray was borne by Messrs. Bob, George, Jack and Clarice Mitchell.
