The Wellington Leader October 7, 1965

Mrs. G. N. Scruggs, a resident of this county since 1925, died Sunday at 2:45 p.m. in St. Joseph's Hospital, following an extended period of failing health.

During her long residence here, Mrs. Scruggs was active in the Methodist Church and in its women's activities, but she also participated in many community and civic enterprises, and as long as her children were in school and worked in those organizations pertaining to education.

She was born Bessie Pearl McCrory in Bellefontaine, Mississippi, on November 12, 1882, the daughter of A. D. and Aphalonia McCrory. The family came to Memphis in 1895. She was married there to George Nathan Scruggs, another early settler of that area, on May 31, 1903. He preceded her in death May 28, 1960.

The family lived at Memphis until 1918, when they moved to Clarendon, then in 1925 they moved to the Rolla community in this county and farmed for several years.

Mrs. Scruggs and the late Mr. Scruggs were among those who organized the Rolla church which remained active until a few years ago.

She was long a devoted member of the First Methodist. She was a charter member of its first Missionary Society, now the Woman's Society of Christian Service, and taught Sunday School classes 10 years. She organized and sponsored a young girl's missionary society.

She was active in the work of the Parents-Teachers Associations of the schools, and she was one of a committee who requested the formation of the first high school band.

Skilled at needlework, her accomplishments in this field gave joy both to her family and her friends. She was also a talented artist and had exhibited her works in local shows.

During the latter part of her life she spent seven years writing the history of her family in novel form, which she dedicated to her children.

Surviving Mrs. Scruggs are four daughters and a son: Mrs. L. W. Wells, Mrs. Herbert Duncan and Mrs. John Holton of Wellington; Mrs. Mildred Starr of Amarillo; and Wesley Scruggs of Torrance, CA.

Other survivors are a sister, Mrs. Sidney Baker of Memphis and 10 grandchildren, who are Miss Pat Starr of New York City; Mrs. R. D. Howington of Amarillo; George and Kelly Scruggs of Torrance,CA; Herbie Duncan of Amarillo; and Mrs. Glen Lacy, Joyce Holton, Nancy Holton, Johnny Holton and Sidney Duncan. There are four great-grandchildren.
