James B. Misenheimer, Jr., Professor Emeritus of English at Indiana State University, 77, died at his home in Terre Haute on March 3, 2010. He was born on Dec. 7, 1932, in Abilene, Texas, and was graduated valedictorian in 1950 from Jasper, Texas, High School. In 1953, he became salutatorian of his class at Baylor University, Waco, receiving the bachelor of arts degree in English and German cum laude. In 1954, he received the master of arts degree in English from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, and in 1964 the Ph.D. degree in English Literature from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

He served as an officer in the United States Air Force for eight years. His teaching career spanned 40 years. He taught at Southern Illinois University, Baylor University, University of Colorado, the United States Air Force Academy, the George Washington University, the University of North Texas, and Indiana State University, where he completed his teaching career with 21 years of service. There, he was chairman of the Department of English from 1972 to 1978 and retired from the faculty in 1993. In 1980 he received the Caleb Mills Award for Distinguished Teaching, and across the years at least 19 other awards for outstanding teaching in the university classroom. In 1983, he was named a Baylor University Man of Merit and was recognized by Baylor as an exceptional alumnus for his professional accomplishments. He was an honorary life member of the Modern Humanities Research Association, for which he edited 16 volumes of the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature in the capacity of American Editor; and he published numerous scholarly articles in his fields of interest, including critical analyses of Samuel Johnson, Charles Lamb, Leigh Hunt, and Charles Dickens. He was a vice president of both The Samuel Johnson Society of London and The Charles Lamb Society of London and had the honor of speaking in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey on several occasions. He was named a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, a rare honor, especially for foreign scholars. His primary teaching areas were Shakespeare, the English Neoclassical Age, the English Romantic Movement, and the English novel. He loved to travel, visiting more than 70 countries during his lifetime. He also had a lifelong passion for the live theater, and counted among his closest friends several well-known stars of the theater world, including Arlene Francis, Kitty Carlisle Hart, Dame Judi Dench, Marian Seldes Kanin, and Millette Alexander.

Dr. Misenheimer was preceded in death by his infant sister, Mary Jo Misenheimer, of Baird, Texas; his parents, James B. Misenheimer and Hazel Ruth Pollard Misenheimer, of Jasper; his paternal grandparents, Pearl Lawson Misenheimer and Hattie Maude Gordon Misenheimer, of Pineland, Texas; and his maternal grandparents, Joseph Johnson Pollard and Fora Zipporah Johnson Pollard, of Hemphill, Texas.

Among his survivors are his wife, Carolyn Misenheimer, of Terre Haute; his sons, James B. Misenheimer III, of Puyallup, Wash., and Quentin Woodley Cowart Misenheimer, of Iron Station, N.C., and their wives, Karen Harpham Misenheimer and Heather Dill Misenheimer; four grandchildren: Melissa Leeann Misenheimer, William Britt James Misenheimer, Julianna Marie Misenheimer, and Jonathan Quentin Michael Misenheimer, all of Iron Station; and his sister, Judy Misenheimer Kimmey, of Kerrville, Texas.

Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2010, at Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 South 25th Street, with Dr. William Coker officiating. Visitation is scheduled prior to services from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Private burial will take place at a later time in Brookeland, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Misenheimer's memory would be welcome at the Department of English Fund, University of Colorado, Boulder 80304; or at the Brookeland, Texas, Cemetery Fund, Brookeland, Texas 75931.
