He was the son of John Abbot and Jane Oliver Abbot.
On May 7, 1833 as William R. Abbot, he married Eleanor I. Harris at Loudoun County, Virginia.
They were the parents of five children, including Nannie Abbot Bentley who married William Gay Bentley.

Founder of Georgetown Classical and Mathematical Academy in Georgetown, District of Columbia located on West Street. He was a graduate of Princeton.
