Gwen was born Gwendolin Grace Cheesman the daughter of William and Annie Cheesman. Gwen was a twin to her sister Mary. She was adopted in 1924 by George Jas Herbert and Laura Smith. She married Merrill bernard Johnson and they had two children, the first Irma Laura who died shortly after birth. Irma is buried in the same cemetery as her parents.
