Funeral Rites Today for Bernice Smoker
Burlington, Indiana--Services for Mrs. Mary Bernice (Kate) Smoker, age 85 of Burlington, a retired school teacher and widow of Jacob Smoker, will be held at 10:00 am today at the Neptune Funeral Home. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery. She died on Wednesday at St. Joseph Hospital in Kokomo, Indiana.

Mrs. Smoker had taught in Warren Central High School in Marion County and at Russiaville, Fulton, Walton, Michigantown, Indiana Boy's School, Indiana Womens' Prison, Indiana University at Kokomo, and Grissom Air Force Base. She had attended Ball State University and Purdue University and was also graduated from Indiana University.

Funeral services for Mary Berniece "Kate" Smoker, age 85 of Burlington, Indiana were at 10:00 a.m. at Neptune Funeral Home with the Reverend Ralph P. Karstedt officiating. Burial was in Burlington Cemetery. Born on October 25, 1894 in Burlington, she was the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Andrew J. Chittick. She was married to Jacob Smoker who passed away in 1943.

A school teacher for over 50 years, she taught her first year of school at Koro School. She also taught at Burlington and Russiaville Elementary; Fulton, Walton, and Michigantown High Schools; Warren Central High School at Indianapolis; Plainfield Boy's School; Indianapolis YMCA; and the Indiana Woman's Prison in Indianapolis. She was also on staff at the Indiana University campus in Kokomo and the Bunker Hill Air Base.

A 1914 graduate of Kokomo High School, Mrs. Smoker attended Ball State University and Purdue University. She was also graduated from Indiana University at Bloomington where she earned her Master's Degree.

Mrs. Smoker also directed operations at her farms and cattle ranch. She was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church and the National Education Association. Several cousins survive; one sister preceded her in death.
