My Great Grandmother

Granny Maxwell was a very regal lady, tall with a straight back and beautiful long white hair. She would play games with us especially Jacks. I remember her getting down on the floor and playing. She would always set the breakfast table at night. She would let me sit next to her while she brushed her at night and she would admonish her granddaughters to "give your hair 100 licks (brush strokes) every day". You never wanted to disappoint her so you were as good as you could be. She never yelled or anything like that, she just had that air of greatness about her. You didn't slump or not sit up straight, or whined, or walk bent--- what wonderful lessons I learned from her. (memories of a great-granddaughter)

--------------------------------------------------

My memory of Granny is one time when I had an ear ache. I was about 3 years old. It was late at night and she gathered me up, put a hot water bottle against my ear and rocked me, holding me close against her. We sat next to a tall window in her house watching the snow. She spoke so softly to me. I never felt so safe. One of my favorite memories to this day. (memories of a great-granddaughter)
