Death Comes to Aged
Citizen, E. L. Payne


E. L. Payne died at 7:20 p.m. Sept. 1, 1939, at his home in this city, death being attributed to a kidney ailment. He had been afflicted several years and confined to his bed 10 days.

Funeral services were held at the family residence at 2 p.m. Saturday, Rev. D. A. Williams, pastor of the Christian church, being assisted by Rev. C. R. McClelland, pastor of the Baptist church. Burial was in the cemetery at Wynnewood.

Mr. Payne was born Oct. 3, 1850, in the state of Kentucky. He grew to manhood in Tennessee, and moved to Oklahoma in 1907. On Nov. 3, 1872, he was married to Miss Julia Carter, and to this union were born nine children, three of whom preceded him in death. He was 88 years 10 months and 28 days old, and had resided in Davis the past seven years.

He leaves to mourn his passing besides his wife, three sons, Walter and Henry Payne of Davis and Frank Payne of Kaufman, Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Mallie Ford of Davis, Mrs. A. M. Huffines and Mrs. E. B. Rogers of Wynnewood; also 27 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild and a host of friends.
