Virgil Lee King was born on Sept. 25, 1903, near the present day community of Kingtown, Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.), Kentucky. He was the son of Thomas Letcher"Tom" King (1881-1973) and Minna Susan "Minnie" Gooch (1873-1981), the second of their ten known children and the first of their seven sons.

Virgil's older sister, Gertie Elizabeth King, died just two months shy of her second birthday. Consequently, Virgil was always considered the eldest of the King children. She is buried in the Kingtown Cemetery next to her maternal GM, Polly Ann Williams.

Virgil's father, Tom, was the son of Jackson H. "Jack" King (1842-1919) and Mary Ann "Polly" Stephens (1854-1925). Jack (Virgil's GF) was born in the Capuchin area of NW Campbell Co. (now NE Scott Co.), Tennessee. Polly (Virgil's GM)was born in Mississippi when her parents moved there from Kentucky in the mid-1840s. They moved back to KY/TN after just 2-3 years. Both Jack and Polly died in Whitley Co., KY and are buried in the Stephens Family Cemetery located in Isham, Scott Co., TN, close to the KY/TN state line and not far from the little Kentucky community of Kingtown.

Virgil's paternal great-grandparents were Enos King (abt 1816-bet 1892/1900) and Nancy Angel (abt 1820-bet 1892/1900)). Both are buried in the King Cemetery (aka Laurel Creek Cemetery & King-Perry Cemetery) in McCreary Co., KY. Enos' rock marker is now missing while Nancy's rock marker is faintly legible.

Virgil's paternal GG-grandparents were Thomas Murray "Tom" King (1790-1880) and Mary Rebecca "Polly" Cox (1800-1881). They are buried in the Duncan Cemetery located near present day Kingtown in McCreary Co., KY. Thomas was the patriarch of the King family in McCreary Co., KY having moved his family from Campbell Co., TN to the Marsh Creek area of lower Whitley Co. (now McCreary Co.) about 1819.

Virgil's maternal grandparents were James Ellison Gooch (1855-1914) and Mary Ann "Polly" Williams (1854-1926). Polly is buried in the Kingtown Cemetery while James is buried in an unmarked grave in the Lakeland Hospital Cemetery in Lakeland, Jefferson Co., KY. Virgil's maternal great-grandparents were Dabney Squire Gooch (1827-bet 1880/1900) and Nancy Colyer (1830-bet 1880/1900). Both Dabney and Nancy are thought to be buried in the Goochtown Cemetery in Goochtown, Pulaski Co., KY, in graves that are also unmarked.

In 1916, at about the age of 13, Virgil moved with his parents from McCreary Co., KY to Parksville, Boyle Co., KY. In the mid-1920s, his parents (Tom & Minnie King) eventually purchased a small farm on what had became by then to be known as Tennessee Ridge Road. There, they would live the rest of their lives (50+ years).

About 1921, Virgil married Viola Edna Johnson (1905-1985) in Boyle Co., KY. Virgil was about 18, Viola about 16. She was the daughter of James "Jim" Johnson (1854-1926) and Katherine "Kitty" Edwards (1863-1948). Viola's paternal grandparents were Hiram Johnson (1817-1892) & Mary Ann Sharp (1822-bet 1860/70). Her maternal grandparents were Benjamin C. "Ben" Edwards (1833-1888) & Sarah Elizabeth Overstreet (1834-1922).

Virgil and Viola were married for about 45 years and had four known children. They were Esker King (1922-1970), Louise Ann King (1925-2001), Kenneth Donald King (1936-2001) and Patricia Jean "Patty" King (1945- ).

Virgil spent time in the Lagrange Reformatory in Lagrange, Oldham Co., KY. He and another man, Dewey David Belcher (1900-1937), had a "shoot out at the rock" that resulted in Belcher's death. They had quarreled earlier that day and arranged a time for the settlement of the illicit money owed by Virgil to Dewey. Both, drinking since the quarrel, showed up with pistols and friends. Dewey fired and missed, Virgil didn't. Virgil was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 21 years. A model prisoner, Virgil was out by 1943.

Virgil's second son, Kenneth (1936-2001) loved to read but had a troubled youth, dropping out of school in 1952 at age 16. He eventually joined the Navy where he got his GED. Once out of the Navy he married a good woman (1958) and went back to school graduating from the University of Kentucky (1962). Hired by the Mercer Co. Board of Education he proved to be a respected and long-time educator in that school system, serving as a teacher, coach, principal and eventually superintendent. The Mercer County Board of Education named the Kenneth D. King Middle School in Harrodsburg, Mercer Co., KY in his honor, despite his personal opposition.

Virgil died on June 7, 1966 in Parksville, Boyle Co., KY when he took his life at the age of 62. He had suffered from health problems for several years. He is buried in the Parksville Cemetery. His son, Esker, a WWII veteran, was buried near him in 1970.

Virgil's wife, Viola, died on Apr. 27, 1985 in Danville, Boyle Co., KY at the age of 80. She is also buried in the Parksville Cemetery, next to her husband, Virgil, near their son, Esker.
