Cathrin was the daughter of Hankerson Ashby and Mary Ann Wilder. She was the second wife of two men, Levi Harris Shugart, whom she married on August 4, 1864 in Tama County, Iowa and Noah Preston Steveson, whom she married on July 27, 1909, also in Tama County, Iowa. She was the mother of six children with her first husband, Levi. According to her obituary, she was a much loved wife and mother.
