Though her tombstone gives her birth year as 1842, it is a mistake. She was actually born in 1843.

She was born and raised in Jefferson County, Indiana, the daughter of Jacob Edward Thomas and Lydia Williams. On 25 Dec 1864, she married Francis Marion Hobart, born in Randolph, Massachusetts 28 Dec 1842, son of Silas Hobart and Diantha West. Frank and Sarah (Thomas) Hobart had two children together in the nine years of their marriage. Frank Hobart died of consumption in Cincinnati, Ohio 08 Oct 1873.

Sarah moved her family to Champaign, Illinois sometime between 1876 and 1879. She married Henry Monroe Straight there 02 Jan 1880. Henry and Sarah homesteaded in South Dakota in the early 1880's and their son Edward was born in a sod house there in 1884. They returned to Ohio by 1887, settling in Dayton. After Henry's death Sarah removed once again to South Dakota with her daughter, two sons and one of her stepsons. She lived in Sioux Falls for the remainder of her life.
