Stephen Terrell Barber was my father. All the records I've been able to find of him show his name as Stephen and that is what is on his headstone. However, the marriage record to my mother on June 15, 1941, has his name recorded as Stephens, which I believe may be correct since his mother's maiden name was Stephens.
He passed away in Cobb County, Georgia where he had stopped to visit with me and my family. My son was in the hospital at the time with pneumonia, and my father walked into the same hospital ER the night my son checked out complaining of chest pains. They said he died without ever being admitted. From my research, all of his brothers whose deaths I can find, died before or soon after the age of 60.
He was gregarious and friendly and had lost the thumb and first two fingers of his right hand to some unknown accident. He always told me a horse bit them off!! I doubt that was true, but it was his way of making a sad story funny for a young woman.
Another interesting tidbit - I was born on his birthday and if my son had waited another 3 days, there would have been three generations born on the same day. But, until I was born, my father had always thought he was born on the 25th, according to my mother. When I came along, he must have dug up his birth certificate and found that we were, indeed, born on the same day (a few years apart).
According to the Social Security Death Index, he was born in 1916, not 1915, despite what is on his headstone. That has always been my understanding, as well - he was 56 when he died.
