MARY JO INTFEN Sunday, October 09, 1927 - Saturday, October 03, 2009
Resident of Overland Park, Kansas

Services to be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009 | 11:00 am, at St. Joseph's Church, 8th and Spring Garden, Atchison, Kansas with Rev. Bertrand LaNoue, OSB as celebrant. A parish rosary will be recited at 9:30 A.M. at the church on Saturday with visitation from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. A private family burial will follow that afternoon at Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Mount St. Scholastica Convent, Atchison Catholic Elementary School or the Alzheimer's Association and may be left in care of Arensberg-Pruett Funeral Home, 208 North 5th Street, Atchison, KS 66002.

Surviving are her 8 children: Tom, Barb (Charlie) Chamblin, Jim, Margie (Robert) Welsh, Dan (Ronda), Susie (Don) Martin, Judy and Mike. 13 Grandchildren: Tim, Blair, Korey, Kirby, Avery, Adair, Riley, Maddie, Seamus, Sean, Dani, Nate, Maeve plus Browen her great granddaughter. Mary Jo was preceded in death by a daughter Mary Jo in 1957 and her husband of 47 yrs, Ed Intfen in 1996. She is survived by her 2 brothers, Ed Dunbar of Simi Valley, CA and Tom Dunbar of Carmichael, CA.

Born in Atchison, Kansas to Edward Leo Dunbar and Josephine (Quigley) Dunbar, Mary Jo was the youngest of 3 children. She graduated from Bishop Ward High School in Kansas City, Kansas in 1945 and received degrees in Home Economics and Art from Mount St. Scholastica College in 1949. She married Edwin J. Intfen on October 5, 1949. Mary Jo and Ed had 9 children, contributing to the 5th generation of the Intfen family in Atchison.

While raising 4 boys and 4 girls, Mary Jo fulfilled her artistic ambitions, by painting many murals in various businesses during the 50's and 60's, as well as, portraits and seasonal designs for her home and many more personal projects. Mary Jo's tender heart and love of nature were expressed so beautifully through her art.

Mary Jo was also a very competitive and self-taught championship golfer. She won numerous tournament championships during the 60's-80's and even into '92 to name a few. Golf was such a sense of enjoyment for Mom that in June 2006, she shot a round in the 80's. Less than 3 weeks later, however, she suffered a complete loss of her eyesight due to undiagnosed Temporal Arteritis, and was blind for the rest of her life.

The strong Irish Catholic ties, blessed with humor and love that Mary Jo and Ed passed along to each of their children, fortified a bond of unity to help Mary Jo thru the last 3 ½ yrs. of her life. Thanks to Barb and her husband Charlie, Mary Jo had a home away from Atchison. In the spring of '09, Mary Jo transferred from the family's home into a private room and the loving hands at Garden Terrace in Overland Park, KS. Just as in the Chamblin's home, Mary Jo received 24 hour vigilant care and support from all her children, grandchildren and attentive caregivers. Mary Jo was always a sweet pleasure to be with, even during trying times. Rewards were reaped by all who touched her. Special thanks to Faye Miller, Cindy Southers, Karen Pohl, Carolyn Fagan, Jean Crossland, Tanit Castillo, Kirby Chamblin, the staff at Garden Terrace, and the "KC Six". Mary Jo Intfen's legacy is passed on through her 8 children in her Irish blue eyes. May God bless her soul and those who knew her, and may those "Laughing Irish Eyes" once again watch over us all. THANKS MOM.
