Irene "Cookie" was born February 24, 1920 on her mother's birthday the daughter of John and Irene (Johnston) Jones. She was the oldest of five children. Irene grew up in Atchison and attended the Atchison schools. Irene "Cookie" married Howard Barker on August 13, 1938. They had been married 67 years until Howard passed away February 7, 2006. They spent most of their years living in Atchison except for a brief time in California while Howard was in the Navy.

She had several jobs in Atchison which included a cashier at Schmiere's Drug Store, elevator operator at the Professional Office Building, salesclerk at United Dept. Store, Dept. Manager at Wards, assisting Howard with stenciling work for Snowden Mize and last but not least Salesclerk at Waisner's. She especially loved selling brides-to-be that special wedding gown. She worked for three generations at Waisner's and was there for 26 years until her retirement at age 79. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Irene will always be remembered for her kind heart and for her love of people. She enjoyed embroidering tea towels and giving them to her family and friends. She loved making pies and giving them away to the special people in her life. Irene always loved preparing meals and entertaining at her home. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed her years working downtown on the mall and was a friend to everyone associated with the other businesses downtown and all the customers. Irene also enjoyed shopping and buying for others, especially her grandchildren. Playing cards (especially pitch) with family and friends was a favorite enjoyment for her. Since the grandchildren and great grandchildren were 3 years old they enjoyed a yearly vacation to the Lake of the Ozarks or Branson with Grandma Cookie and Pop.

Survivors include two daughters Connie and Bob Swogger, Atchison, KS, Nancy and Steve Oliver, Atchison, KS, three grandchildren Sandy (John) Fresh, Lisa(Paul) Haynes, David (Jaime) Oliver, five great grandchildren, Eric Skidmore, Austin Skidmore, Caden Oliver, Carter Oliver, and Lauren Haynes and numerous very special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Howard Barker, her sister Corinne (Harold) Nitz, Betty (John) Cameron, Mary (John) Potts and a brother John Sonny (Gerry) Jones.

Special thanks to Rev. Lee Hendon, Dr. Eplee and special nieces, Joyce Klein, Mary Liggett, Barb Smith, Linda Parrott, and Kay Baker and Abundant Life Hospice who assisted in her care during her time of need.
