Daughter of Joseph William and Sarah Isabelle Bowen Burnett, Mary G. Burnett was born near Boydton, Mecklenburg County, VA, and spent most of her life in Buffalo Springs, Mecklenburg County, VA. She married on 18 November 1896 Beverly Watkins Shelton of Buffalo Springs. The couple had eleven children, nine of whom survived to adulthood. In her last few years, Mary was chronically ill and lived in her daughter's home in Richmond, VA, where she died at age 75.
