Susan Anna Stewart was the daughter of David M. Stewart and Jane DeWolf Stewart. Susan was born in Georgia and was in Marengo County, Alabama at the age of 2. There is a record of her parents joining the Nanafalia Baptist Church there.

Susan Anna Stewart married James J. Hale in Alabama on November 20, 1851. They were in Tompkinsville, Choctaw County, Alabama before they began a trip to Texas in 1866. They came with a large party of relatives led by James Law (James J. Hale's uncle) by boat down the Tombigbee River to Mobile, on to New Orleans and Indianola. From there they traveled inland and eventually settled in Madisonville, Madison County, Texas. After about 20 years, they moved along with their daughter Agnes and her family to Alvin, Brazoria County, Texas.

For several years they lived in Galveston and Alvin, Texas. Susan's husband James J. Hale died in Galveston at the home of their daughter, Agnes Roberts.

Susan A. Stewart Hale is noted as a widow in a 1906-1907 City Directory in Galveston, Texas at the home of her daughter Agnes Hale Roberts. She does not appear on the 1910 census.
