Ralph L. Church
(November 8, 1914 - September 24, 2009)

Ralph L. Church, 94, previously from Atchison, KS, passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, September 24, 2009, at La Verna Village, Savannah, MO.

He was born on November 8, 1914, the son of Steven and Willella K. (Jones) Church.

In his professional life, Ralph left the family farm during the Great Depression to work for the Burlington Railroad. After World War II, Ralph moved to Bonner Springs, and began as a lineman for Kansas Power & Light. Eventually he transferred to Salina and rose to a supervisory position in which he oversaw the installation of substations and new lines. He continued performing the job he loved until his retirement more than 40 years later. With an eighth-grade education, Ralph laughed about sometimes teaching electrical engineering classes to new KP&L recruits who held graduate degrees.

Following retirement, Ralph dedicated his abundant energy to the Brotherhood of the Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, Eastern Star and charitable activities throughout the community. He loved people. Until his final months, Ralph remained a familiar cheerful face in the Atchison and Rushville communities, where he considered his many, many friends as close as family.

Ralph is survived by one brother, W.T. Church Sr., Amazonia, MO, and by many nieces and nephews and their families.

Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 75 years, Margie (Faris) Church, earlier this year. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Steven and Willella K. (Jones) Church, and four brothers, Roe, Raymond, Earl and Jim.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Burial will follow in Sugar Creek Cemetery, south of Rushville, Mo. Family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Ralph would appreciate donations to Shriners for their hospitals to help victims of burns, especially children, heal. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.
