Gerald W. Gormley, 96, of rural Hiawatha, died early Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at Community Medical Center in Falls City, Nebraska where he had been a patient for nearly a week. He was born April 6, 1913 in the Good Intent Community in Atchison County, KS, one of 5 children of Thomas and Ida Molt Gormley and was a lifelong resident of northeast Kansas. Gerald farmed and raised livestock near Highland and in 1950, moved to a farm east of Reserve, retiring in 1979, at age 65. He continued to help his son on the farm for a few years until he became homebound. Mr. Gormley was a longtime member of St. Ann Catholic Church of Hiawatha. He enjoyed fishing and being in the outdoors. Gerald married Maxine Fulk February 28, 1938, at St. Benedict's Church near Bendena. She survives of the home. Also surviving are a son Joe (Shirley) Gormley of rural Hiawatha; three daughters: Geraldine (John) Majerus of Junction City, KS, Linda (James) Beckner of Falls City, NE, Cheryl (Denny) Murphy of Atchison, KS; 13 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, a son and grandson in infancy, a great-grandson, three sisters and a brother. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann Catholic Church of Hiawatha, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 26. Interment will follow at Hiawatha Cemetery. Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home after 9 a.m. Friday. The parish rosary will be recited at 6 p.m. Friday evening, followed by family visitation. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Gerald Gormley Memorial Fund which may be sent in care of the funeral home, 124 S 7th St., 66434.
