James Robert Dawson was the first child of Robert (B.) Dawson and his second wife, Nancy McMurray Dawson. He had five younger siblings and nine half-siblings by his father's first wife, Jane Watkins Dawson.

He studied medicine at Clark Academy, Missouri Medical College and the Kentucky School of Medicine, post medical studies were done in St. Louis at Washington University.
He moved to Afton, Indian Territory in 1888 and started to practice medicine. As a doctor he made long trips by horse and buggy or horseback to treat his patients and deliver babies..

Dr. James Robert Dawson married Martha Alice Ramsey on March 23, 1889 in Carroll County, Arkansas. He was a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and a prominent citizen of Afton. He and his brother Wig, were partners in Drug Store and built the Old Dawson Hotel, which still stands.

James and Martha had 1 daughter and 3 sons.
