Grandpa was a quiet gentle soul. Long and lanky, a characteristic that was carried to my father and my sons.
Fred had a goiter on his neck in his 30's and in spite of the doctors successfully removing the growth, grandpa decided he was dying of cancer. He therefore retired and "waited" to die. He had a chair set sideways up against a window in his living room and would sit there for hours looking out over his farm.
My dad was in the navy so we would only get to visit about every 2 years. Grandpa's parting words were always, "this will probably be the last time you get to see me". Thankfully he was wrong for many many years.
Grandpa had gone to California to visit his daughter, Mary. He wasn't feeling well and Aunt Mary was rubbing his back. As she spoke to him he stopped responding and she realized grandpa had passed over, something he'd "waited" on for over 50 years.
