Antecedents—Born August 4, 1872, at Springfield, Mass. Son of Oliver Harris Smith, wholesale grocer. His early home was at Springfield, where he prepared for Yale.

In college—He took the Select Course and received a Senior Appointment.

After career—He entered the wholesale grocery business and in 1898 succeeded to the business of Smith & Adams, wholesale grocers at Springfield. He is a member of the Springfield Country and the Winthrop Clubs.

Family—January 14, 1904, he married, at Springfield, Ida Pearl Chapin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Pliny Chapin. now of Butte, Mont. They have no children.
