Rush was the youngest of 14 children born to Grant and Delia Wofford Custer in Runge TX. He had one daughter, Patsy Custer Patton, 3 grandsons and one granddaughter. He married his second wife, Kathrine Knifer, while he was in the service. They lived in Waco until his death. He worked for Wm Cameron Company, and loved to fish with his brother in law, Glenn Streight, husband of his sister, Alberta, the youngest daughter of Grant and Delia.
