Lydia Ann Merritt Whittington

BENTON, LA- Services for Lydia Ann Merritt Whittington, 69, of Benton will be held at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2009, at First Baptist Church of Benton. Officiating will be Brother Robert Beadle and Brother Billy Pierce. Interment will be at Pilkinton Family Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Rose-Neath Chapel in Bossier City, La. Ann was born October 15, 1939 and passed away Monday, August 31, 2009 at her home in Benton. As a young lady she graduated from Benton High School, then attended La. Tech, LSU-S, and Centenary College where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Education. She later attended La. Tech where she received a Master's plus 30 in Administration.

Ann will be remembered for her love of music, art, nature and reading. She held a great love for her family and also the students she taught during her career. She spent 29 years with the Bossier Parish School System teaching children from Rocky Mount and Benton. Playing the piano and singing for her family at weddings and other events brought her great joy throughout her life. She loved bird watching, picking up pecans at the farm, tending to her flowers and caring for her pets. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Benton, an active member of the Bossier Restoration Foundation where she spent many hours hosting tours of the Hughes House, and a member of Cypress Garden Club.

Ann was the daughter of the late John Curtis Merritt and Jessie Inez Andrews Merritt.

She was beloved wife for 52 years of Don Martin Whittington; loving mother of Julian Curtis Whittington and wife Melissa; Justin Martin Whittington and wife Tanya; awesome Nana to Blake Martin Whittington, Anna Kathryn Whittington and Sarah Elizabeth Whittington. Other survivors include sister Evelyn Maranto and husband Charles; brother John Michael Merritt and wife Susan; nieces and nephews: Melanie Canatella, Monty Montgomery, Mary Kathryn Patten, John Merritt and Jane Massey.

Pallbearers will be Blake Whittington, Jack Batson, Jesse Williams, Mayor Albert Doughty, Sheriff Larry Deen, Monty Montgomery, John D. Bundy, John Merritt, Jim Thompson, Carolyn Whittington, and George Stroud.

The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Hargon and his nurse Sandy, the staff of WK Hospice, nurse Suzanne Wallace, and caregiver Margaret Carthen. Sincere appreciation to Judy Hunt for the excellent care given to Ann during her illness. The family deeply appreciates Mr. Henry Cantrell for his generosity in providing transportation to Chicago for further medical evaluation. A very special thank you to the many people who have shown acts of kindness over the last three years. Your support has meant so much to the entire family.
