Robert Poe Reed Jr. was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania 21 Sep 1932, the only son of Robert Poe and Anna Leone "Nan" (Haynes) Reed. He attended the Perkiomen School in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania and in 1955 he graduated from West Virginia University with a B.S. in Mining Engineering. He joined Bethlehem Steel as a member of their Loop Course management training program and was assigned to the Cambria Division. In 1963 he was named superintendent of the Coal Preparation Plant at Mine 33 in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania. In 1974 he was appointed chief engineer of the Cambria Division, overseeing all engineering and construction. When a major underground fire broke out at the plant, he successfully directed the work required to extinguish the fire and return the plant to full production, an operation which took thirteen months to complete.

In 1980 he transferred to Bethlehem International Engineering Corp., a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel, and moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1982 he became sales manager, a position which took him abroad to Europe, India, Australia and China. Upon completion of an extensive project in the Shandong province of China, Bob and the rest of the BIEC team were guests of the Chinese government and China's prime minister at a formal banquet in Beijing's Great Hall of the People. In 1989 Bob retired from the Bethlehem corporation and accepted a consulting position with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He provided technical support for the design and construction of the coal-fired Cambria Co-Generation Plant, which uses bituminous coal waste as feedstock. Bob retired completely in 1998, moving first to Tucson, Arizona and later to Keizer, Oregon. He died there 02 Aug 2009 of complications resulting from Lewy Body Dementia.

Bob was married three times: his first wife was Patricia Lee Sechler, with whom he had three children. They divorced in 1968. He married again in 1976 to Lucille (Roberts) Askew, who died in 1988. Bob married a third time in 1989 to Claire Jean Roddy, who survived him. He was also survived by his son Robert Poe Reed III, his wife Patricia and their children Hannah and Jared; his daughter Christina (Reed) (Buffoni) Williams, her husband Don and their children Jessica Buffoni, Seth, Reed and Paige Williams; his daughter Amy (Reed) Link, her husband Don and their children Coleman and Tristan. Bob also had four stepchildren: Ben & Rob Askew, Diane (Roddy) Morris and Robin (Roddy) Ditmer.

In his younger years Bob was an avid hunter and golfer. Bob and his wife Claire were deacons in the Presbyterian church; they traveled abroad a great deal and enjoyed entertaining. He was a kind, generous, sociable man, with an engaging smile, and was greatly loved by all who came to know him. He was a capable professional and a dedicated father.

A memorial service was held for Bob in Keizer, Oregon, his last residence. Funeral services were held at his longtime church, First Presbyterian in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with family, friends and former colleagues in attendance. His ashes were interred in Dudley Methodist Cemetery, Dudley, Pennsylvania, where many generations of the Reed family rest.
