James Robert Barnes, Jr., 88, of Chester, passed away quietly Saturday, July 11, 2009 of complications due to Parkinson's disease.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 15th at 11:00 a.m. at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home Chapel in Woodville with visitation from 10:00 a.m. until service time. Officiating is Reverend Pam Howard.

The interment will be a private family committal at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Chester.

J.R., as he is known to his friends and family in Chester, was born September 14, 1920 to James Robert, Sr. and Ada Elizabeth Autry Barnes in Chester on the family land where he and Virginia, his wife of 66 years, built their home for retirement in 1979. They lived there until their deaths; Virginia's being in December, 2005.

J.R. graduated from Chester High School at 15 and graduated from Sam Houston Teacher's College in Huntsville where he met and then married Virginia in June, 1939. They taught at Cedar Bayou School District until World War II began. At that point, he joined the U.S. Navy and served as the captain of a missile ship in the Pacific. After returning from the war, he worked for ExxonMobil in Baytown, then Humble Oil, for 30 years.

He is survived by his son, J.Robert Barnes, III, M..D. and wife, Mary Gale; granddaughter, Jessica Love Barnes, all from Houston; and his daughter, Elaine Barnes and Ron Gray.

He is also survived by several generations of his elder sister, Edith Wilbanks; Randy Wilbanks of Austin; Gerry and Beth Wilbanks of Diboll and their children and spouses and grandchildren.

The family would like to extend special appreciation for the loving care given to Mr. Barnes on the day of his death by his caregiver, Jo Ann Coleman of Woodville and Wilma Vinson, a neighbor and also nurse of Odyssey Healthcare Hospice.

Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home, 113 W. Holly, Woodville, Texas 75979.
