After graduating West Point Military Academy July 1, 1831, he participated in the "Seminole Uprising" in Florida, and returned with an "illness" that ultimately led to his death in 1844. He received a gold sword in 1839 from the citizens of St. Augustine, Florida for "meritorious service at Fort Mellon" in the Seminole Wars. The family retains this ceremonial sword that was awarded him.
" Yesterday afternoon the 21st inst. after a short illness, Brevet Capt. W.K. Hanson, U.S. Army. His friends and the friends of the family are requested without further notice to attend his funeral from the residence of his father, Isaac K. Hanson, this afternoon at 4 o'clock."
