Herbert Nesmith Wimberley was born on September 25, 1885, in Brackettville, Kinney County, Texas. He was the son of William Hickman Wimberley and his second wife Martha "Mattie" Callie Pruitt. Herbert's paternal grandparents were Pleasant Wimberley and his wife Amanda Julian Jackson.

Herbert's mother Mattie died in 1895 when he was 9 years old. On the 1900 Census 14-year-old Herbert is listed as living with his half-sister Lucy Tarver Wimberley who had married Oliver Cryer, a stockraiser in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas.

When he was 24, Herbert married 21-year-old Ivy Melissa Meek. The couple had only one child, a son whom they named Jack Lester Wimberley, born on March 3, 1910.

Herbert and Ivy made their home in San Angelo. He worked in the building construction business, primarily as a plaster contractor. His full-sisters Velma and Claudie and full-brother Walter lived nearby.

Herbert died on March 11, 1953, in San Angelo. He was buried in the Lawnhaven Cemetery in San Angelo, Tom Green County, Texas. Twenty-two years later in 1975, his widow Ivy died and was buried beside him.
