Ethel was the wife of Elbert Giles "Al" Grantham (1904-1977). They were married on December 24, 1938 in Tucson, Arizona. Ethel was married previously to Asa Martin Smith (1896-1977) on May 25, 1918 in Salina, Trego, Kansas. Ethel was the daughter of Samuel DeWitt Younkin and Ida Anna (Spencer) Younkin. She was the granddaughter of Pvt. John W. Spencer and Sarah Ann (Rallya) Moore Spencer.

Obituary from the Arizona Daily Sun:

"Ethel Maude Younkin-Grantham, 104, died Saturday, March 1, 2003. Mrs. Grantham was born in Topeka, Kan., on Feb. 9, 1899.

She traveled to Arizona in 1929 with her oldest sister, Mae. When their car broke down In Tucson, they decided to stay and get jobs until the car was fixed. When Mae and her husband, Nelson, continued on to California, Ethel decided to stay behind in Tucson where she eventually met E.G. (Al) Grantham. They were married on Dec. 24, 1938, and made their home in Tucson where their three children were born.

In 1943, the Grantham family moved to Williams to continue their ranching business and send their children to school. Their son Alan has continued the family tradition and still owns the ranch.

Mrs. Grantham loved ranching and gardening, and kept the yard at the ranch blooming with beautiful lilacs, hollyhocks and lilies. Her hard work in the vegetable garden during the summer months was enough to sustain her family through winters after canning much of the food.

Survivors include her three children, Bonnie Ruth Favro of Show Low, Marlyn Kay Glenn and Alan Giles Grantham, both of Williams; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Grantham was preceded in death by her husband, Al, in 1977 when he died of cancer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Northland Hospice, P.O. Box 997, Flagstaff, AZ 86001. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today, March 4, at Williams Cemetery in Williams.

Arrangements are under the direction of Norvel Owens Mortuary."
