As a young man, he was an accomplished basketball and baseball player. It was at a baseball game in Leaksville, NC, that he met Mary Jane Shelton, still a student at Leaksville High School. A few years later when she was a student at Radford College, they eloped and married in Washington, DC, on October 3, 1932.
For most of his life, he was involved in sales, representing such companies as Brown-Williamson Tobacco Co, Brookside Manufacturing Co of Brooklyn, NY (dry goods), and National Old Line Insurance Co. Except for traveling away from home so much, he enjoyed his work immensely and the people he met and worked with through the years.
After marrying, the couple lived in Washington, DC, and in Richmond, Colonial Heights, and South Hill, VA, before settling in Roanoke, VA in 1947. They had 3 children. In 1966, they returned to Richmond, where they lived until his death in 1975.
Francis always enjoyed being around his children, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He had a lot of friends in the places he traveled for business, returning occasionally to visit them. One thing no one ever seemed to forget about him was that wonderful, and sometimes goofy, smile.
