Mary Margaret McKenzie's mother Emma died when she was seven years old, and she was lovingly raised by her older sisters and stepmother Lillie. She graduated from Marcellus High School and Western Michigan University at Kalamazoo, and she then taught grade school for six years at the old Bald Hill School near Newberg. She went to Southern California in 1923, where her sister Claire was living, and there she met Fred Streip, who was serving in the U.S. Navy. They married in 1927, and had two children, Edwin and Ruth. While Fred served at sea and on the East Coast, Mary lived on the family homestead in Michigan, and in 1930 when Fred was transferred back to California they moved to San Diego. Fred retired from the Navy in 1937, and they lived once more in Michigan for a year, but then settled in West Los Angeles in 1939. Fred returned to the Navy with the coming of World War II, and after the war they remained in Los Angeles until 1962, when he and Mary moved to La Habra, california. In 1967, they moved to Hemet, California, where they lived their later years.
