Jacob Steffan was born on July 7, 1844 in Wendelsheim, Alzey district, Prussia/Germany [just west of Manz, Germany]. His father was Peter Steffan and his mother was Elizabeth Eckel. Jacob immigrated to Texas after completion of his service in 1868, in the Grand Ducal Army . He had a son, Otto, who died in infancy and one daughter, Valesca, born 16 June 1880 with Eugenie (Gerbracht) Steffan, whom he married on 17 April 1878 after her arrival in New Orleans from Germany. Jacob passed away from Heat Stroke, on August 28, 1883 in Hearne, Texas at the relatively young age of 38. {{Photo source documents attached to this memorial}}
