Daughter of Myron HARWOOD/Judith ALLIS

From the research of Find-A-Grave Contributor P. K. Magruder:

"Death of Mrs Ellen E Chaffee
Mrs Ellen E Chaffee, wife of the late Chester R Chaffee, died in her home in The Lenox, 11 Myrtle street, at 10.15 yesterday morning. She had been in failing health since the death of her husband, November 7. Mrs Chaffee was born in Whately, November 12, 134, and was the daughter of Dr Myron M and Judith Allis Harwood. She was married to Mr Chaffee, a resident of this city, June 5, 1861. They had two children, only one of whom is living. Mrs Chaffee was a woman of great strength of character, graceful and charming in all her ways, a woman of rare intelligence and unusually progressive. To her was due the credit of the fine library now in Whately. She conceived the idea of taking the few books then in possession of the town and starting a free public library. By her untiring zeal she secured an appropriation at the next town meeting and also interested outside parties until an unusually fine collection of books was the result. During her stay in Whately she identified herself with all the social life of the community and was very active in the church life, for many years being assistant superintendent of the Sunday school, president of the home and foreign missionary societies, and also of the ladies’ benevolent society. She was known for a bright and sunny disposition, and was greatly beloved by all who knew her. Her home was the center of social life, and young and old were always cheered by contact with her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She leaves one daughter, Miss Gertrude Chaffee, a teacher in Hooker school in this city, and one sister, Miss Mary E Harwood of Stamford, Ct. There is also a stepdaughter, Mrs George F Eastman of Granby. Another daughter, Mrs Kate Allis Hall, who was for many years a teacher in the Central street school, died about 10 years ago. The funeral will be held in the home Monday afternoon at 2.30. Burial will be in the Springfield cemetery.
