Harry served as a Corporal in the Army during World War I, in Company "A" 323 Field Signal Battalion. He went to France on troop ship Levianthon. Years later, he told his daughter that one of the proudest days of his life was marching in the Victory Parade, led by General Pershing, down 5th Avenue in New York City on September 10, 1919.
Harry married Alma L. Reed on December 23, 1920 in Paola, Kansas. Their children were Ione J. and Kenneth E. Early. Alma died unexpectedly in 1933 due to an ectopic pregnancy. That year was in the middle of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl, so resources and money were scarce in a farming community. Harry left his daughter and son with his parents in Linn County, Kansas in order to find work in the closest big town, Kansas City. As luck would have it, Harry was spotted standing in a long line outside the Chevrolet plant, where an old Army buddy, Ray Wells, worked in the personnel department. Ray called Harry inside and hired him. Harry worked many years at that plant. Harry second married Dorothy Davis on April 27, 1935 in Liberty, Missouri. Although his mother died in October of 1938, Ione and Kenny continued to live with Harry's father until May of 1939. Afterward, they came to live with Harry and Dorothy in Kansas City, Kansas. Around 1941, the family moved to Overland Park, Kansas (a suburb of Kansas City) and resided at 8660 Robinson. By 1944, Harry began working in real estate, buying and selling houses. Eventually he branched out into building motels in Overland Park, Kansas, Salina, Kansas, Chillicothe, Missouri, Brazil, Indiana, Hutchinson, Kansas and Pueblo, Colorado. In late April of 1946, Harry and Dorothy welcomed their only child together, Gerald Lee "Jerry" Early. Harry, Dorothy and Jerry moved to California around 1960 and, over the years, lived in Anaheim, Buena Park, Fullerton and Westminster.
