Civil War- Enlisted on 21 August 1863 at Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan; he was residing in Grand Rapids prior to his enlistment at 29 years of age; mustered in on 27 August 1862, Troop B, 5th Cavalry Regiment as a Private; promoted to Corporal; captured and imprisoned 19 October 1863 during the Battle of Buckland Mills (The Buckland Races), Fauquier County, Virginia; returned to his regiment 4 June 1864; promoted to Sergeant; wounded (gunshot fracture, right leg, with subsquent primary amputation in the middle third of femur) in action on 8 April 1865 at the Battle of Appomattox Station, Appomattox County, Virginia; commissioned 1st Lieutenant on 14 April 1865; mustered out on 31 August 1865 at Washington, D. C.
