Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Les was born on May 16, 1918 in Sabetha, KS. the son of Leslie A. and Nina (Mikesll) Smith. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1936. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran having served in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. Mr. Smith worked as a plasterer, and owned and operated the Smith Liquor Store, laundry, and car wash. He was a member and Past Commander of the V.F.W. Post #1175, a member of the American Legion Post #6, both of Atchison, KS., was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, was a Shriner and a Mason in the Active Masonic Lodge #158, and Scottish Rites, Lawrence, KS. He was an active supporter of the Atchison High School Booster Club and had coached Legion Baseball for many years.
He was married to Marie Wilburn on Aug. 31, 1946 in Atchison, KS. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Sloan, Pensacola, FL., five sons; Leslie A. (Janelle) Smith, Atchison, KS., Charles "Chuck" (Beth) Smith, Pittsburg, KS., Rick (Mary Carol) Smith, Pittsburg, KS., Jeff (Carol) Smith, Atchison, KS. and Jim (Jenny) Smith, Atchison, KS, a brother; George Smith, Grandbury, TX., two sisters; Laura Teare, Atchison, and Martha Hopkins, La Mesa, CA., twenty-three grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. His parents, wife Marie, son-in law Kenneth, a brother Jack Smith, and sister, Mary Jane and one great grandchild preceded him in death.
