Ira was born to Abraham & Betsey (Wheeler) Crowell in Madison County, New York in the year 1831. Ira was one of ten children, and was the seventh born.

Ira was a farmer for all of his working life. He married Marilla Faulkner about 1850 and the couple had 4 children together, Polly, Caroline, Nelson, and Martin. All 3 of the children were born in Chautauqua County except Caroline, who was born in Ohio in 1854. There is no documentation to support the family ever living in Ohio.

Marilla died in 1879 and we find Ira on the 1880 census remarried to Ellen (surname unknown). Also listed on the same census is Anna Crowell, age 18 listed as the daughter of Ira & Ellen. I believe she is the daughter of Ellen and was incorrectly enumerated on the census as a Crowell.

On the 1892, 1905, and 1910 censuses it is only Ira & Ellen in the household.

In 1920 Ira is found living with his daughter Polly & her husband Sylvester Worden. His martial status is listed as 'married', however, Ellen is not a part of the household.

Ira passes away in 1922 in the town of Villenova where he has lived for the majority of his life and is buried at Hamlet Cemetery.
