Ward V. Nickell, May 20, 1923 - Dec. 23, 1998, Ward V. NICKELL, 75, Zephyrhills, Fla., formerly of Carroll County, died 3 a.m. Wednesday at his home.
Born in Rochester to James and Minnie WARD NICKELL, he married Hazel RANDOLPH on July 3, 1976 in Bringhurst. She survives. Mr. Nickell was a retired engineer from Conrail after 34 years. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, he earned a Purple Heart and the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry against Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, American Legion, Forty & Eight, and Green Acre Golf Club.
Survivors include two sons, Larry [NICKELL] and Ward NICKELL, both of Logansport; three stepsons, Don YEAKLEY, Greentown, Larry YEAKLEY Monticello, and Jeff LOHNING, Walton; one daughter, Sherry Lynn NICKELL, Briscol, Va.; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey NICKELL, Rochester, Bill NICKELL, Logansport; one sister, Helen KELLY, Rochester. He was preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and a grandchild.
Services are at 1 p.m. Monday at Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home, 2097 W. Alto Road, Kokomo, with Rev. Steve COLE officiating. Entombment is in Sunset IV Gardens Cemetery with honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1152. Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to Zephyrhills. Florida Hospice program.
